What a sewer scope inspection is

A sewer scope is a video inspection of the main line that runs from your house out to the city sewer or your septic tank. We feed a self-levelling HD camera down the line through a cleanout and watch the footage live on the monitor with you standing next to us. Nothing gets dug up, nothing gets guessed at, and you see the same picture we see.

Almost every expensive sewer job starts as a small problem that nobody could see. Roots get into a joint. A section settles and starts holding water. A hairline crack turns into a collapse. From inside the house all of that looks identical — a drain that runs a little slow — right up until it does not run at all. A camera is what turns an unknown into a known.

What we look for

• Root intrusion. Mesquite, palo verde and ash roots find pipe joints and keep growing once they are inside. This is the single most common cause of repeat backups in Southern Arizona.
• Cracks, fractures and collapses. Ground movement, age and heavy equipment above the line all do this.
• Bellies. Low spots where the line has settled out of grade. Waste sits in the dip instead of flowing, so the line clogs again and again no matter how many times it gets cleared.
• Offset joints. Sections that have shifted out of alignment, catching solids and paper on the lip.
• Scale and grease build-up. Often clearable with hydro jetting rather than replacement.
• Pipe material and age. Clay, cast iron and Orangeburg all fail in predictable ways, and knowing which one you have changes what the right repair is.

When a sewer scope is free

A scope is free when it is paired with any service we perform. It is also free for qualifying property owners:

• Homes built 1980 or earlier
• Any property with pre-existing sewer or drain issues

What a scope costs if it does not qualify as free

If your scope is not free, the price is based purely on how far you are from Oracle. The closer you are, the less it costs. There is no hidden trip fee on top.

• Free — inside Oracle city limits.
• $100 — within 50 miles. San Manuel, Mammoth, Winkleman, Dudleyville, Aravaipa, Kearny, Catalina, Oro Valley, Tucson, Marana, Red Rock and Sahuarita.
• $250 — 50 to 150 miles. Globe, Superior, Green Valley, Casa Grande, Florence, Benson, Sierra Vista, Phoenix and Nogales.
• Further out than 150 miles? We will still come to you — call and we will give you an accurate number over the phone.

Who should get a sewer scope

• Home buyers. A standard home inspection does not include the sewer line. It is the most expensive thing in the house that nobody looks at, and in an older Arizona neighbourhood it is the thing most likely to fail.
• Anyone in a home built 1980 or earlier. Clay and cast iron lines of that age are at the end of their service life.
• Anyone getting repeat clogs. If a line has been cleared more than once in a year, something structural is causing it and cabling it again will not fix it.
• Anyone who has just had a backup. Clearing the blockage treats the symptom. The camera tells you the cause.
• Anyone quoted a full sewer replacement. Get the footage before you sign. Plenty of lines quoted for replacement can be lined instead, for a lot less.

How the appointment goes

1. You call and describe what is happening. We ask two questions and give you a price before we roll.
2. We locate or access the cleanout. If there is not one, we will tell you what it takes to add one.
3. The camera goes down the full run of the line while you watch the monitor with us.
4. We explain what is on the screen in plain language — what is normal wear, what needs attention now, and what can wait.
5. If you do not need work, we tell you so. That is the whole point of inspecting before recommending.

What happens if we find a problem

We repair before we replace, every time. Depending on what the footage shows, the fix is usually one of these:

• Hydro jetting and drain clearing for roots, scale and grease, with a camera-confirmed clean before we leave.
• Trenchless CIPP pipe lining when the pipe itself has failed — a new seamless pipe formed inside the old one, most homes finished in a single day, without trenching your yard.
• Septic tank inspection and pumping when the problem is downstream of the house rather than in the line.
• Leach field repair when the drain field is the real bottleneck.

How long does a sewer scope take?

Most inspections take 30 to 60 minutes including setup and walking you through the footage.

Do I need a cleanout for a sewer scope?

It is the easiest access point. If your property does not have one, we can usually still scope the line through a pulled toilet or roof vent, and we can install a cleanout so future inspections and clearings are simpler and cheaper.

Can I get a copy of the video?

Yes. Ask us on site and we will get you the footage — useful if you are negotiating a home purchase or comparing quotes.

Is a sewer scope worth it before buying a house?

A scope costs a fraction of a sewer line repair. In older Southern Arizona housing stock, it is the highest-value inspection dollar you can spend.

How often should a sewer line be scoped?

Every three to five years for an older home, and any time a drain starts running slow or a clog comes back.
